I’m happy to announce Foursquare 7.0 went live today!
This was a huge collaborative effort involving a number of teammates across disciplines, including seven dedicated iOS engineers and three user experience designers. On my team, we had three user interface designers (myself included as the team lead) and one brand designer pitching in on illustrations, animations, iconography, and marketing materials. This was our largest team to date.
I’ve written about the last two major Foursquare releases. Because we had a larger team this time, we took care to find new ways for engineering and design to work better together. Our entire design team is now using git to commit assets and styling changes. We developed a style guide, so communicating about typography and colors — and keeping them consistent — is easy.
As designers, iOS 7 presented an exciting opportunity for us to evolve the Foursquare brand and visual language. We focused on removing chrome, using color to indicate affordance, and exercising typography to denote hierarchy.
Looking at the releases I’ve been a part of, I think their progression reflects how our team has grown and learned to work together better, and we’re still learning. It’s an exciting time to be part of this team, and I’m thankful for that.
By the way, we’re hiring designers!
